Old Time Revival is a monthly event at Downbeat Diner & Lounge for which the musical crowd of Honolulu countdown the days impatiently. Mostly because it features great non-recurrent musicians, allowing each month a new live experience. While last month Old Time Revival welcomed in Tricky Britches all the way from Portland (OR), this edition will feature 4 local bands: Foreseeable Futures, North Shore Ramblers, Raised By Wolves, and Discord And Rye.
Foreseeable Futures is an indie acoustic music duo (+ boyfriend/girlfriend duo) from the island of Oahu, Hawaii. Phil plays guitar and sings while Anna sings harmonies and plays other instruments like the melodica, tambourine, and harmonicas. They share a passion for playing music that highlights subtleties and harmonies.
The North Shore Ramblers is a bluegrass band based on Oahu, Hawaii. For those who wonder, Bluegrass is a style of acoustic music that originated in the 1940s when Bill Monroe, Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs combined elements of country/western, gospel and blues music with the British, Irish, and Scottish music of their Appalachian mountain heritage. It is played most commonly on the mandolin, fiddle, five-string banjo, six-string guitar, and upright bass, but the resonator guitar ("Dobro"), harmonica, and electric bass are also found in bluegrass. Percussion is not generally used, with the insistant rhythm being a result of the interplay of the stringed instruments. Bluegrass music is often called "that high lonesome sound" but it includes a wide range of lively instrumentals, sweet ballads in three-part harmony, soulful a cappella gospel quartets and up-tempo love songs.
Raised by wolves, fronted by singer songwriter Nick Danger (Hell Caminos,) brings high energy americana sing along songs that can be appreciated by fans of Hank Williams, Johnny Cash, and Against Me! Supporting Danger will be famed slide player Charley Myers. Their robust selection of original music will surely get your feet stomping and entice an urge for strong bourbon whiskey.
At the center of the exploding Americana movement in Honolulu is Discord & Rye, a roots-rock group of musicians dedicated to exploring the history and future of original American music. With solid foundations in folk, bluegrass, blues and rock, Discord & Rye has taken roots music off of the porch and into Honolulu’s revered whiskey joints... Their sound is honest, feel good music with timeless qualities...
